The “hey, I know I’m short” Post
Among the majority of my friends, I am the shortest-adult-person they know. For many of them, the mere characteristic of my shortness makes my friendship an even more endearing experience—possibly because I am easier to hug, or because I remind them of a younger sibling. On the other hand, I still receive my share of short jokes, some more unwanted than others. I’ve dealt with it my entire life, so it doesn’t bother me as much as if someone called me a bad person…because that rarely, if ever, happens. It’s funny, I catch myself making jokes about myself around people. I enjoy being a witty, silly person, and I feel that maybe saying what others may be thinking, might alleviate the tension. When I am not putting my shortness on a pedestal, I still get people who are curious of my exact height. Some wonder how much taller they are compared to me, some are just beginning to manifest what snarky comment to release next. What I hear very often after I reveal to someone that I am 4’8” is, “Hey, do you know you can…” Without them even completing their sentence, I already know what they want to say. 9 out of 10 times, I’m right. What they want to say is “Hey, do you know you can get a handicap sign for your car?” That question doesn’t upset me, mostly because I think sometimes people just say it because they’re trying to make conversation with me. I brush it off and say that I have legs that walk perfectly well, rather, I would run from a far parking spot instead of taking up a parking spot that someone else might really need. On the other hand, there are some rude people who say “Hey, do you know you’re legally a midget?” Now, who would want to hear that? I hate when people label others for their height. It’s like me calling all basketball players, giants, because they’re taller than most people.
To all my friends out there, make sure you never call me midget. It’s the only word in the English language that I detest. Bad memories from childhood, I guess. Anyway, this was just a quick blurb, not really thought out, but something I always think about. I’m not mad :) I accept that I am short because it’s something I can’t change (unless I have major surgery). I focus on traits that I can control and I work on what I can. It makes life way more interesting:)
Here are a few of my friends who love that I’m short, and/or sees beyond that physical quality and looks for everything else I stand for :) There’s more where that came from.

It’s almost the end of the school year! Naturally, everyone wants to get it done but lack the motivation and willpower to finish off strong. I can relate. I am so aware of my lack of motivation that I feel guilty. Now that I am conscious of my present state, I want to set goals again. Keep my eye on the prize. This is something I have to remind myself to practice from time to time.
When setting goals, don’t approach it like a shopping list. View it as an outline for a paper with bullet points of specifics: how are you going to get to where you want to be?
Best of luck!
Here’s one for your noggin’ :)
